Man’s Best Friend, the Health Benefits of Pets

by Scott on July 30th, 2007

hugging-kittens.jpgWow, what a long 4 days. The drive was grueling. About 13 hours each way and traffic was aggravating. No body knows how to merge and it seems that Americans (as well as Canadians) have forgotten the concept of the left lane. You know…thats the side of the road that the slower traffic is not supposed to be in. Either that or I’m misunderstanding the signs. Not to mention I have 2 days of fast food and 2 days of home cooked food to try to burn off this week. Anyway enough of my complaining.

While I was up in NY some relatives at our reunion had brought their dogs. My uncle brought his two pugs and a cousin brought his basset hound. This was my first experience with pugs and my cousin had a basset hound before named Winslow, who’s ear would drag along the ground where ever he went and pick up anything along the way including his own slobber. My uncles pugs were wonderful little dogs with the most adorable little scrunched up faces and great personality and the basset hound at nine months old looked full grown and had the bark of a 200 pound St. Bernard.

Pet therapy has been in health news before so I figured I would reiterate a few things and link a full article on it from Yahoo. Now I don’t know how everyone else feels about pets whether your a dog, cat or even a reptile person. Pets make you feel at home no matter where you are. Just seeing a happy dog starts to make you happy too and animals want to make you happy. Have you even been angry or sad and you may have been sitting on the sofa, and in walks your cat or dog and it hops up on your lap or sits at your feet and looks up at you with big eyes as if it were trying to tell you that everything is alright? Pest know when we are upset and they offer love unconditionally no matter how much you discipline them. It’s simply amazing how much a cat will make you work for its affection any other time but when you are upset they will give it to you without any coaxing.

Now I know some of you “Men” out there are getting your testosterone flowing and are reading this as if you have no sensitive side to you but you know as well as I do that we all have a soft spot in our hearts for pets, so quit being so ignorant and read up more on pet therapy here. You had me at “two pugs.” I adore them.

I have to say, my husband has been a happier, more relaxed person since we’ve had pets. And the two of us are endlessly entertained by our animals. :]

As i sai, this was my first experience with pugs and I thought they were adorable as well. I preferred the black one as its face was closer to that of a Boston terrier and the coat was silky soft. I’m not impressed with small dogs but pugs, bostons, and mini pincers are my favorite of the smaller breeds.
