What Exactly Are Corbohydrates?
Websters Dictionary Defines Carbohydrates as follows: “Carbohydrates: Any one group of compounds containing carbon combined with hydrogen and oxygen in the form of aldose or a ketose, essential in the metabolism of plants and animals. The carbohydrates include sugars, starches, and cellulose.”
ok, so now that you have the technical definition of carbs we can dissect it a bit more. You basically have two types of carbs. Simple can complex, or as some like to refer to them as fast and slow digesting carbs. Both have their pros and cons. In moderation and proper dieting procedures they can both be advantageous.
Complex Carbs are foods such as whole grains, legumes, starchy vegetabls and cereals. These are foods that digest at a much slower rate than simple carbs. They provide a sustained breakdown of carbs in sugars to provide your body with energy fuel.
Simple carbohydrates are foods such as fruits, milk products and table sugars. While fruits and milk products provide a fast digesting carb that can be helpful for “fast” energy, simple carbs with refined sugars while digesting fast and providing your body with energy also get stored more quickly as fat if not used, kinda like a fuel depot for your body. We all know how these fuel depots start popping up all around when you over-do the simple carbs.
Complex carbs are good for meals as well as small amounts of simple carbs. Simple carbs, such as fruits are a good source of energy before and after a good workout to get your body back up to speed. These are the problems people face with carbohydrates. You have to know when and you have to know when to say when. More tomorrow.
