Conclusion Of Carb Week

by Scott on October 6th, 2007

To end carb week I thought I would try to compile a list of carbohydrate articles.

This first article is from nutrition.about.com

“How to Reduce Your Risk Factors for Heart Disease With Dietary Changes
Choose Healthy Carbohydrate Sources

Stay away from sugary foods like candy, cookies, cakes, and pastries. A high sugar diet will increase your triglycerides and won’t help your heart disease risk at all. Healthy carbohydrates include whole grain breads, whole grain pastas, brown rice, and lots of colorful fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables should become the main part of your diet. Not only are fruits and vegetables sources of good carbohydrates, they also contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and other phytochemicals that can help improve your health.”

This Article is from AZcentral.com
“Simply put, carbs are an everyday necessity. They are the body’s No. 1 choice of fuel, providing steady, healthy energy.

The key to health is selecting “good” carbs, which can help prevent diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. They also help fight fatigue, mood swings, stress and obesity.

Among good carbs are certain slowly digested fruits, vegetables, legumes, dairy products and whole grains. Sweet potatoes, brown rice, grapefruit, fat-free milk and apples cause a gradual rise in blood-sugar levels.”

This is from Kidshealth.org

“A healthy balanced diet for children over 2 years should include 50% to 60% of the calories consumed coming from carbohydrates. The key is to make sure that the majority of carbohydrates your child eats are from good sources and to limit the amount of added sugar in your child’s diet.”

Low Carb Diets and Lab Tests
According to recent research, low carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet can affect your laboratory test results. If you are on a low carb diet and are having laboratory tests performed, you should make sure to tell your health care provider.

At this time, there have been very few large studies examining the impact of low carbohydrate diets on people’s health. However, findings from a variety of smaller studies indicate that these diets do impact body chemistry, resulting in changes to lab tests such as HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These might be expected as they are markers for cardiovascular health, but a more surprising finding is that low carb diets can cause changes in other assays, such as those related to kidney function.

Until there is a better understanding of the affect of low carbohydrate diets on the body, it is best to alert your doctor or laboratorian if you are on one of these diets to help them interpret any otherwise unexplained changes in your test results.”

-Well I hope carb week and these articles have helped you better understand carbohydrates and the importance of them in everyday nutrition.
