The Right To Bare Arms

by Scott on November 2nd, 2007

bicep.jpgThis is something that sometimes bothers me in a way that is kinda like an equal opportunity, sexual discrimination bit. Why is it that woman can get away with wearing shirts that show their arms in the work place, but men can’t? Perhaps its revolting to see a man with hairy arms strutting through the work place as opposed to the delicate look of a womans arms. I don’t know, cause honestly sometimes there are women that show arms that I don’t want to see.

The fact is, is that a woman can get away with wearing a sleaveless outfit and a man can not. Recently I had a subordinate at work come in with a basketball jersey on. It wasn’t a tank top style jersey but a sleeveless v neck t-shirt type jersey. I had no choice but to warn him that a manager may say something about it to him about it. His reply was that a few women wear tank tops that show much more than his shirt. I couldn’t say he was wrong, but sometimes women can get away with more casual attire in the work place than a man can.

I guess it also depends a lot on what field of work your in. I work in the manufacturing business. I normally wear a t-shirt and jeans with Nike Jordan’s (the Jordans make my day much easier cause I’m constantly on my feet). I wear some t-shirts with graphics and sometimes w golf style shirt. I couldn’t get away with wearing a sleeveless shirt even in the hottest days of summer, but the temps can and the women can. Am I screamin “No Fair, daddy! No fair”, no I’m just wondering where do employers draw the line?

I agree it is sexist. My spouse is a Financial Manager in a bank. He is required to wear jacket and tie every day. If he doesn’t he gets a negative on his performance reveiw. Meanwhile the woman get to wear sleeveless shirts. He can obviously get away with wearing short sleeves (or even sleeveless if they even exist lol) but it’s the jacket part that I find inequitable. I wonder what is more “professional” looking: A guy with no jacket or one who is dripping sweat from being so over heated?
