Making New Years Resolutions | Preparing Yourself For Failure

by Scott on December 18th, 2007

babynewyear_1.jpgI think it goes without saying that every year people make new years resolutions just to break them within a week of the new year. I’ve done it and I’m sure everyone else has done it at least once in their life. I made pretty good on mine last year to quit smoking. I’ve had my days where I’ve smoked in the past year, but I never started back up habitually. I resolved to work out hard and put on some muscle mass, which I’ve done at a healthy rate.

The problem with resolutions is that people set dates and say I’m going to stop doing this or start doing this on so and so date. I can understand it around this time of year. It’s hard to be disciplined around the holidays with all the good food and family. As fun as family is, they can drive you to drink, smoke, and eat at times.

I say this; if your going to resolve to do something and it’s the end of the year then by all means set a goal for the new year. If it’s mid May, don’t start making a new years resolution, make a new months resolution. Procrastination is your healths biggest enemy. Setting goals are easy, achieving them is a different story. It takes a mind set that you can set that bar high and achieve it. Some people have to set that bar a little low, reach that goal and set it higher. In my opinion I think thats the best way.

Set an ultimate goal. Say to yourself “I’m going to do this!”…but first set a smaller goal. Reach that goal, set it higher. Reach that goal and again set it higher and so on and so forth.  Until you’ve reached that ultimate goal. The self gratification along the way will be worth it. When you reach your ultimate goal you’ll feel invincible, like Superman taking in the power of the sun, and after that you will know that you can do just about anything when you set a path for yourself!

This year don’t make a resolution. Make a master-plan to achieve not a resolution but an accomplishment to be a better you. Make failure an unfathomable option.

I plan to better myself as a father and to try to be more understanding to my son. To be more patient with him and to try to talk more and yell a lot less. To guide him better so his transition into his teens in a few years will  be a maturing phase and not a shock to him. My daughter is still a baby and to be a better father to her, I must first become a better father to my first born and spread the attention and love as I accomplish that goal. I’m not going to wait for the new year to start trying to accomplish this mission, I’m going to start right now…and I won’t fail!

That is awesome. I also had a similar discussion with myself, yes I said myself, that I need to be more patient and understanding with my girls. I am going to work on listening more and taking a deep breath before yelling only to feel like a horrible mother an person 15 minutes later. i agree, we should not set ourselves up for failure and take it one day at a time. Everybody is human and we all make mistakes but the beauty is we can get up the next day and start all over. And as far as kids are involved, we all want the same thing… love them and create a happy world around them!:)

I understand why most people write off resolutions as another holiday tradition but those people are missing a golden opportunity to better themselves. Done right, resolutions can be the major turn around someone may need in their life. Unfortunately the New Year resolution is now seen as an empty self promise. I just wrote an article on resolutions and I hope that people understand that January 1st is not a magical day. But it is a chance to improve your life circumstances. Great Post!

An empty self-promise. I could have not put it any better than that. I’ll do a link and post to P2S.com tonight ralph. Thanks.
