Gillette Clinical Strength Deodorant Review

by Scott on January 7th, 2008

gillette-clinical-strength.jpgDoes it seem no matter what deodorant you use you still experience a lot of underarm wetness? Well I have used various deodorants and I’m very picky when it comes to what I rub under my arms. Currently I use Axe antiperspirant. Whiloe it workes pertty good and smells nice I still have the problem on some days when I just have a lot of under arm sweat. It’s kinda embarrassing at times.

When something new comes along, I like everyone else am skeptical.  I’m skeptical especially if it says something like extra strength or even clinical strength. When I got a free stick of Gillette Clinical Strength Deodorant I was just as excited as I was before I got it. Woohoo. But I figured, what the hell? I’ll give it a shot.

By direction your supposed to apply it at bedtime. Why? I don’t know, but thats not going to work for me so I use it just like I use any other deodorant. In the morning after I shower. It has a nice scent to it and goes on clean and fairly dry. My out come? It works great. Even with a sweatshirt on all day at work I still have less under arm sweat than I would if I wore a t-shirt and no B.O.!

Though a bit pricey for a deodorant it’s worth the price if you have tried others and have not been satisfied. Give it a try.

You can buy it here Drugstore.com and get more info on this product as well.

I just bought this product and when I got home I realized it only has 1% more of the active ingredient ( aluminium zirconium trichlorhydrex ) than my regular deodorant. This upsets me because I sweat A LOT with my regular deodorant and this stuff is supposed to be ‘Clinical Strength’ but prescription products have a completely different active ingredient ( aluminium chloride ) when getting this I saw another deodorant called CertainDri which also contains aluminium chloride. I really wish I would have purchased that instead but i’m not giving up on Gillette just yet. I just find it extremely hard to believe that a deodorant with the same exact active ingredient will just magically work better but I’ll find out soon enough. Cheers

I hear you, Joe. I just checked and The Gillette has 3% more than my regular deodorant but I notice a world of difference. I don’t sweat as much with the Gillette. I like the different scents of my usual, Axe. But what good is the smell if i”m sweating through my shirt. Plus the Gillette has a nice scent to it as well.

This stuff doesn’t work for me and I don’t even sweat that much. First of all, you have to apply it at night. Not only do I forget sometimes, but my wife hates the smell. Then, I shower in the morning and feel like I’m washing it off even tho the package states that I can do this. So then I started using it both in the evening and the morning and still no better or worse protection than any other anti-perspirant. My advice: skip it.

I don;t understand the whole apply at night thing either. I apply in the morning like regular deodorant. Most of the time It works well but there are some days when it doesn’t seem t work at all as far as wetness protection. The other day I as wearing a sweatshirt with a t-shirt underneath. It wasn’t a warm environment at all but I took the sweatshirt off and my pits were soaked. I honestly don’t think it is worth spending 6+ dollars on it.

I am doing research for an ad campaign at school and I have a couple questions about this product.

What made you decide to buy Gillette Clinical Strength?
What is your perception of the Gillette brand?
How important is having dry armpits?
How important is the smell of your deodorant?
What does the name “clinical strength” mean to you?
How has excess sweating affected your daily activities?

Please provide your age if you feel comfortable sharing that information.

    Thank you!

Hey Laura, Thanks for stopping by. I will answer your questions a bit later today.

Sounds like you have a touch of hyperhydrosis like myself.

Applying at night allows the AZT to act more effectively on the sweat glands since you’re typically much dryer asleep at night. Put it on in the morning and you’re just going to sweat it off right away.

I’m disappointed to hear that its just another marketing gimmick by adding another 1-2% AZT and charging double the price.

For something effective look up Drysol. I think you can get it without a scrip in the states these days. If not a dermatologist can hook you up or our Canadian friends will sell it to you OTC. I’ve been pit stain free for over 10 years. You still have to apply at bedtime but its alcohol based so what smell there is evaporates quickly.

I’ll give the whole apply at night thing a chance. Thanks, Chad. Here is a queation for you then. If I use this at night should I apply a regular deodorant during the day after my normal shower?

I have tried every deoderant there is and nothing works. I sweat so much that I was even considering botox. Then I found out that botox only works for three months and it costs around $1000.00 each time. That is just not worth it. Anyway, I finally tried the gillette product and I don’t know how but it really works. There are some days that I still sweat but even then it’s very very little. I guess deodorants just work differently on people. Thats the only answer I can come up with.

I have tried many kinds of deodorants and non of them work. Even when i am waring an under shirt i still just sweat right through both. Its very embarissing and im sick of it. So i am thinking about buying gillette clinical strength but first i wont to know if it really works. OR is there anthing else i could try?

This product might work….have not tried it BUT it is like $7 which if you ask me is a rip off. There is a product called CERTAIN DRI that is a clear roll-on that you put on at night. I have used this product for a couple years now and it works and is a lot cheaper than $7.
It really gets me that a company can come out with a product that has been out for some time, call it a new name and charge the comsumer loads of money so they can get rich.

CERTAIN DRI works for me and you can get it at WAL-MART or TARGET and they always have it in stock. This new stuff if you ask me is a joke.

(Jerry try this product instead. I used to sweat a lot but this stuff really did the trick for me.)

First deodorant doesn’t stop you from sweating it just covers up the smell. Second, anti perspirants of any kind block the sweat ducts with some kind of aluminum product. The Gillette product will work if you apply the night before when you are less likely to sweat and let it block the sweat ducts. Not to be preachy, but there is a big difference between a deodorant. Also check with your health care coverage, I know botox is covered for hyperhydrosis by mine. Cheers.

I bought the gillete clinical strength deodorant about one month ago and it did not work for me at all. It just have only 1% more than other deodorants, this is a rip off. I had use the arrid extra dry deodorant, it has 19% aluminium zirconium trichlorhydrex and it does the same job than the expensive gillete deodorant. Now i am starting to use the Mitchum deodorant to see if this works. This has 25% aluminium zirconium trichlorhydrex, more than the gillete product.

My final opinion, don’t spend your money on the gillete clinical strength. It is not that effective.

    In answer to Laura’s Questions:
What made you decide to buy Gillette Clinical Strength?

Saw the ads on TV (with the business man in the blue shirt with sweatstains)

What is your perception of the Gillette brand?
A long time leader in the antiperspirant/deodorant business

How important is having dry armpits?
As an active guy, I know that I am going to sweat – if I do, than so be it. If I have some pit stain action going, that’s cool. But it would be nice to keep the amount of sweating to a reasonable amount.

How important is the smell of your deodorant?
Very – I do not want to smell of BO, but at the same time, I do not want to smell like a chemical or a strong artificial smell. I want to have my deodorant smell as if I was wearing a lightly scented masculine cologne.

What does the name “clinical strength” mean to you?

Normally sold only by prescription only

How has excess sweating affected your daily activities? Wear T-shirts under most clothes to soak up sweat; wear sweater/sweatshirts (except in the summer) to hide sweatstains (hoping that the T-shirt wornn beneath won’t sweat through to the sweatshirt, etc); wear darker colors (black) or white shirts to mask the sweatstains that might show up.

Please provide your age if you feel comfortable sharing that information.

Junk! Used it for a week and yes I applied it at bedtime. I think I sweat more. Went back to Speed Stick. So upset. I sweat a lot sometimes and I really really was hoping this would work. I actually bought 3 sticks of this stuff because it’s impossible to find in canada. Blah

I sweat a LOT. I’m in the Armed Forces and I wear a light blue shirt, I’m afraid of lifting my arms, sometimes I feel the drops coming down my sides, and when I take my pants off, the top part of my underwear it’s soak. So I went to the doc. ’cause I’m sick of this, they gave me “DRYSOL” It’s great, “0″ sweat, and I mean “0″. It’s a pain to apply, but it’s worth it. I may try Gillette Clinical Strength or Certain Dri. I’m just tired of going to the doctor each time I need a refill.

Ok, It’s been 3 days since I bought Gillette’s Clinical Strenght, Did nothing for me, I was pouring down sweat. I don’t recommend it at all. I paid $8 @ WaltMart, the good thing is that you can send it back for a refund. I went to the Doc and got Drysol again, it’s the only thing that works for me, i’m back to 0 water under my armpits. This time I got 2 refills. Good Luck to all of those with the same problem, let us know how’s this working for you.
Thanks! And join an SA Meeting (Sweaters Anonymous) ;)

DRYSOL… Hands down, or arms up,lol. Tried all the diff “clinical” strengths out there.. Didn’t phase my horrible pit sweat. I would sweat through 2 shirts at work just sitting in the office and wasn even warm. I would even sit down on the couch with my shirt off and it would drip on the couch. I am perscribed an a medication for a sleeping disorder and my fight or flight reactions are heightened. This directly causes me to sweat horribly in the pits. Was perscribed DRYSOL and although it sometimes irritates my skin at first, it is the ultimate line of defense. Cost me $10 with insurance and last a month or two. I was spending $20+ a month on otc sticks. Saving over a hundred a year with zero pit sweat.. I can now hold my girl w/o being concerned about the HORRIBLE sweating problem. DRYSOL! DRYSOL! DRYSOL!!!

I have a touch of hyperhydrosis, Gillette didn’t even phase my sweating problem. I had a huge sweating problem, and I work closely with the public. I would sweat so bad, I’d try to pull my arms so close to my body to keep people from seeing an sweat outbreak.
I found maxim on conradhealthcare.com. It worked for me the very first day. Just like Gillette you put it on at night but this one actually works. This product has no smell at all and for the first time I dont have to wear 2 shirts . Try it

No luck with this product so far.

I used perspirex before, and it solved my sweating problem. It is also non-prescription. Unfortuneately it is expensive… it is $20 for a tiny bottle. Also uncomfortable and can make sleeping difficult. I tried this in hopes of finding a cheaper, less invasive solution. Back to persipirex, I suppose.

I tried it. I sweat and feel it dripping down my sides all the time. Now it is 90 degrees out and not one drop. Since we are all different, I could definitly see it working for some and not others. Deodorant is not one size that fits all. Sometimes people who sweat have anxiety and the sweat causes even mor anxt. Others people may be out of shape and overweight and your body is doing overtime anyhow. I work out a lot and I am wondering if that causes my thermostat to alkways run hot. My 2 girls always complain about being hot also and so there is a genetic predisposition here as well. My mother had hot spels all the time. Hell I get sweaty when I am approached by a hot girl. It sucks and blows my cover. I am a good looking guy and should not have this problem but I do!. I hate to sweat…it makes you want to leave, go home and shower. Finally though this stuff seems to have helped a life long problem. I hope It continues to work for me cause I have had it.

I just bought a stick of this brand a day ago. I applied it last night and it didn’t stink or bother me in bed. When I awoke in the morning I worked out and showered after. While working out it seemed to slow my underarm sweating somewhat. I make puddles while I working out. After the shower I reapplied it after drying off and it seemed to do the job. However, the weather is extremely humid right now and I doubt this weather is a good trial period. I’m a little sweaty now but not as bad as yesterday. I should say though I have been walking with my arms raised all day. How long can you say that your just stretching without people looking at you funny?

    Swimmingly yours,
    Peter

I gave Gillette a call today and they said that you should put it on at night and that it should work even after you shower in the morning because of the pore-closing action that the deodorant performed while sleeping.

HI Victor. It’s perfectly normal to sweat more now that you’re working out. However, before you run out to find some Gillette Clinical Strength read through the link below and the comments other have made.

    Clinical Strength Deodorants

  • Mandi
    Jul 22, 2008 at 9:11 pm

I didn’t see where this was posted, so thought I would share.

Deodorant doesn’t work just by sitting on top of your skin. It needs to be absorbed into your skin. The reason the clinical strength deodorants are to be applied at night is to give them time to absorb into your underarm.

If you apply it in the morning, it gets sweated out before it has time to work into your skin. That completely defeats the purpose.

You can shower in the morning in you apply before bed at night because the product is already absorbed.

Hi Mandi, Thanks for commenting. Someone actually explained that in the 9th comment. Makes perfect sense. In this post I talked about clinical strength deodorants and a commenter named “Marlee” brought up some really good points about deodorants and antiperspirants.
