Hughsnet Satellite Internet..Not So High-Speed
If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been kind of dry for writing content this week. There are a couple of reasons for that but mainly because we ventured to step outside of the world of Dial-up internet and get the only available “High Speed” internet in my area. Hughsnet satellite broadband internet.
Let me tell you that it was a headache from day one. The installer informed me that I would need a Non-standard install because there was no way to do the standard install due to a few circumstances. So out of pocket was $125 to install a 6 dollar poll with a 7 dollar bag of concrete. So it’s all installed, online and sounds so good. The speed is pretty fast…well faster than dial-up and I immediately update Windows Vista. This is where things start to go wrong. During the update the speed of the broadband suddenly comes to a stand still about 6 hours after the install. I call tech support and they inform me that I have exceeded my “Fair Access Policy” limit. What is this FAP? Well it seems that the company in name has this policy that they never inform you of before signing up that limits you to 200 mb of download in a 24 hour period except between the hours of 3am and 6am, at which hours you can download the world if you want to. Well 200 mb is a fair amount to download in 24 hours unless your downloading a crap load of music and/or movies. Well let’s define “Download”. They define download as any amount loaded on your browser while you surf, to include pictures and streaming audio or video. Stuff that doesn’t really get saved to your hard drive permanently. They didn’t tell me that either. So I exceeded my 24 hour limit and I can’t get back on until 4 pm the next day to which my wife and I get on and start blogging our lives away as usual. Come 11 am the following day, only 48 hours after it was installed we have reached our limit again and traffic is once again suspended for 24 hours.
Let me break the price game down for you. Equipment will cost you $399 plus up front $59. So your first bill which is due immediately is $468 plus taxes which comes out to around $477 if my math is correct. Plus the $125 non-standard install fee. So now we are up to about $602. Now I only paid the $125 fee at first because I thought I would be paying the installer the entire amount but was mistaken.
Long story, short. I canceled my Hughsnet account 54 hours after it was installed. Tech support was very kind and sympathetic to my complaints and did a great job apologizing for how crappy of a company they worked for. I canceled the account and they told me I would have to pay for the Standard installation of $200 to which I replied that I wanted to be paid for uninstalling the service. I’m going have to uninstall the equipment and send it back and I’ll have to pay for shipping. So why do I have to pay for standard install when I never signed anything saying I would pay for standard install and signed for a non-standard install. Hughet is GARBAGE. So for the amount of money you pay a month you are limited to your traffic and downloads. What a crock of crap. Shame on me for not checking online reviews of hughsnet, because If I did I would never have gone through this. There are only about 2 entries out of about 100 that gave a good review. And I thought “What could be worse than Dial-up”? Hughsnet, that’s what! We are back to dial up and the 48 hour headache is gone.

I am a mobile satellite internet subscriber but have never used Hughsnet nor would I even consider such a move after reading this blog, as well as several others. My mobile provider doesn’t limit me to anything per day which is good because they’d be out of business should they pursue that kind of practice. I’m sorry to hear of your experiences though; those kinds of situations are always trying.
