Caffeine And Your Muscles

by Scott on March 6th, 2008

starbucks I recently read in Men’s Health Magazine many benefits of caffeine. We know most of them and we just keep adding it to our list of reasons why to NOT quit drinking coffee. Here is one more for you.

Caffeine can be beneficial to your muscles. because calcium has to be released in the muscle fiber so the fiber can contract, caffeine can block adenosine receptors that are attached to muscle fiber. This creates electrical activity that gives you bigger bursts of calcium. This makes for stronger muscle retractions.

So, drinking a beverage with caffeine is a good idea before your workout. Just remember not to deprive yourself of calcium…they work hand in hand.

This fails to consider a couple things.

Switching fuel substrate utilization with caffeine during and after a workout will keep AMPK elevated - which is of course at the top of the oxidative phenotype path. Post resistance workout, PI3k/mTOR and inhibition of the AMPK/PGC-1alpha path is achieved. Arguably, it is possible that stimulant use could limit muscle growth by limiting activation of the former pathway. Of course, there isn’t any research that I am aware of that examines these mechanisms specifically. But, the research supporting caffeine as an ergogen is lacking.

Either way, much more than calcium flux should be considered.
