Midweek Meltdown | Wandering Minds

by Scott on April 2nd, 2008

human_brain_as_belief_engine They say Idle Hands Are The Devils Workshop. Will if Idle hands are the devils workshop then what is an idle mind? When things are slow or there is nothing to do, whether your at work or home, it sometimes bring about time to think. Sometimes these thoughts are about work, bills, life, love or worries in general. When left with too much time to think and an unoccupied mind things can go one way or another. Sometimes you start thinking about things that make you happy or something funny and laugh to yourself. Sometimes you think of depressing thoughts of lost love or loved ones and sometimes and sometimes you think of things that make or have made you angry. While happy thought are our goal 99% of the time, there are those times when we tend to think of the latter two.

Keeping your mind occupied is not always easy and focus can be a hard thing to achieve during times of stress. Everyone has their own thing to bring reach their mental nirvana per se. Some people in times of boredom use crossword puzzle or Sudoku, which are both great because they stimulate your mind and you learn something in the process. As I talked about last week, mine is music. I can either listen to music to put my mind in a state of ease or focus and I can play guitar to get my mind off of things.

Whatever works for you is important. If you haven’t quite found it or are unsure, try some different things in times when you find yourself out of touch. Often times people take an unhealthy approach to this and rely  on habits or addiction such as cigarettes, alcohol, or food. While all of them may make you feel better temporarily, they do more bad then good and there are much better alternatives. A healthy mind leads to a healthy body and a vise-versa.
