This to me is probably one of the most important things to look for if you are looking for a gym. Unless you have your own home gym or the space to accommodate one you will need to find a gym that suits you if you are serious about bodybuilding or just lifting weights. Arnold brings up some great points in the excerpt from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s New Encyclopedia Of Modern Bodybuilding.
Arnold Says…
What To Look For In A Gym
“The First thing to consider in choosing a gym is ascertaining what kind of equipment and facilities it provides.
- A gym should not be too big or too small. If it is too small, you constantly have to wait for equipment and you can’t keep up the rhythm of your training, But if a gym is huge, you can fee dwarfed by too much space, which makes it hard to keep up your concentration.
- If you want to make the best progress, the gym you train in has to have a full complement of free weights and benches. It should have sets of dumbbells heavy enough for most intense lifts. There should be exercise machines and cable setups that allow you to work all the major body parts.
- There should be equipment for doing your cardiovascular training—treadmills, exercise bicycles, steppers, aerobic classes, whatever you need for your individual aerobic workouts.
- Some gyms and health clubs have other facilities like saunas, steam rooms, staff massage therapists, swimming polls and even indoor running tracks, so if any of these things is important to you check what’s available before you sign up for a membership.”

People into bodybuilding, like Arnold, look for a certain type of gym. Family guys will look for other things, like babysitting perhaps. Others will go to the “Y”. There is no one answer.

No where in this article does it say there is one answer. This is simply an excerpt from a book on bodybuilding. It’s more a less suggestions on what to look for and it’s from a bodybuilders perspective. He’s not saying “THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED!”, he’s saying this is what you may want to look for depending on your goals.
I don’t have a lot of equipment and I’m not trying to be a bodybuilder. But I hate waiting and I hate having other people around while I’m trying to work out, so a home gym is more my style. However there are limitations to what I can do and what I would like to be able to do. Everyones preferences are different.
