Celebrity Health Profile | The UFC’s Georges "Rush" St.Pierre

by Scott on June 5th, 2008

GSP_NC The Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC, as it is more often called has had many great fighters throughout the years. Fighters have come and gone and the sport of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Fighting has evolved greatly since the reign or the Gracies. Many fighters have stood out among the best and one of those fighters is French-Canadian Georges “Rush” St-Pierre. Fitness RX Magazine caught up with St-Pierre back  before his rematch with UFC Fighter Matt Serra, the top welterweight fighter from The Ultimate Fighter 4 who won in the Ultimate Finale and won a title shot against St-Pierre. In an underdog upset, St. Pierre lost his title to Serra at UFC 69: Shootout. Here is a few excerpts from Fitness RX’s interview with George “Rush” St-Pierre. Conducting the interview is Carlon M. Colker.

“CC: I know you seperate out and train in a number of notable styles with quite a few trainers. For example, your past BJJ (Brazilian Jiujitsu) trainer was none other than Renzo Gracie. You also have boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and kyokushin trainers. How are all these diverse style structured into a weekly training schedule so that you can give ample time to each? In other words, how does it break down?

GSP: For my hands and my foot work, I box three times a week, I wrestle for takedowns and for my legs. Then there’s my Brazilian JiuJitsu that I do for submissions, positions, ground work and flexibility- again three times each week. Also three times each week, Muay Thai for kicks, knees and elbows. Sometimes I like to combine Muay Thai and boxing, with Muay Thai coming in at the end. I never do any of these sessions for more than 1 hour and mostly never longer than 45 minutes.

CC: What about your conditioning workouts? How does that make its way into the routine?

GSP: My conditioning workout is a combination of circuits. It involves using the medicine ball with other specialty equipment, plyometrics, calisthenics, stretching and some weights. It all depends on the day and my trainer Jonathan is always varying things. We do a great deal of core and try to mimic a fight in duration, so the circuit lasts for 5 minutes, the same as a round. After that, I get only a minute to rest and it’s back on.

CC: How important is diet to you and what type of diet do you follow.

GSP: I don’t diet, except when I have a fight coming up. Eight weeks before a fight I eat as healthy as I can. I eat carbohydrates normally before my workout and after I stay with protein. My carbohydrates are moderate and my protein is higher. It’s the protein that helps me recover. Otherwise, my calories are about the same amount throughout the day.

CC: Do you take any dietary supplements? Protein shakes? Vitamins, minerals, amino acids etc.?

GSP: I take a whey protein drink after each training session. I also take a lot of Omega 3 oils. That’s enough for me. It works. I do not tkae any multivitamins or mineral supplements.”

Georges St-Pierre went on to win his fight against Matt Serra by TKO in the second round at 4:45 to regain his welterweight title at UFC 83.
