Down In The South They Like Their Sweet Tea, But They May Not Like Kidney Stones
Down in the south they love the sweet tea. And when I say sweet tea I don’t mean slightly sweetened Iced Tea. It more a less tastes like sugar water with a hint of tea in it. I can not drink it because for the sweetness and for the fact that it’s a lot of sugar. McDonalds serves sweet tea down here but I’m not sure about up north. The amount of sugar in a McDonalds medium sweet tea is about 38 grams. That’s not that bad and it’s actually less than what a medium Coke has. With that said, a lot of people make their own and I’m sure they probably put even more sugar in it than they probably should. So what does this have to do with kidney stones? According to an article at MSN.com Health, Iced Teas can be the worst thing for some people that are prone to kidney stone problems.
“For many people, iced tea is potentially one of the worst things they can drink,” John Milner, an instructor in the department of urology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, said in a news release. “For people who have a tendency to form kidney stones, it’s definitely one of the worst things you can drink.”
The failure to stay hydrated is a common cause of kidney stones. Summertime heat and humidity, which causes excessively sweating and dehydration, combined with an marked increase in iced tea consumption in the United States, raises the risk of kidney stones during this time of year.
